The Kwikee electric steps by Lippert Components are designed to automatically extend and retract any time the camper door is opened or closed. These automatic steps are very handy in terms of convenience and make it easy to enter and exit the RV. However, in case of any repair works and inspection, it is important to locate the fuse corresponding to these steps. 

The Kwikee step fuse box location depends on the model of the RV. The 2000 model does not have a cabinet, which was then introduced in RVs in 2004. Generally, you are likely to find the step fuse box under the dash, upright but towards the floor. How to Troubleshoot Kwikee Steps

Among the most frustrating issues you can face in an RV is the steps not working. It becomes a matter of both inconvenience and safety anytime you want to access and exit your camper. Below are some of the plausible reasons why your steps may not be working and how to go about the situation. 

Malfunctioning Magnetic Switch

RVs that have automatic steps installed, often contain a magnetic switch that notifies the motor any time the door is opened or closed. If this switch happens to malfunction, you will notice that the steps do not work properly.

This switch is often located on the inside of the door frame such that when the door aligns with it, steps retract. To fix this, you will have to reposition any misalignment. 

Override Feature

Thankfully, many RVs come with an override feature for their steps. This allows them to remain extended when parked instead of them retracting when the door closes. If there are any issues, locate this override button and ensure it is in the auto position. 

Malfunctioning Gears/ Step Motor

If you notice that the step motor makes a sound whenever you are retracting or extending the steps, inspect the motor for any dirt and debris. They could be clogging the wires causing them to make noise. Ensure that you blow out and clean it and then try the steps again. If that does not work, it could be an issue with the gears or motor linkage. It may be time to replace the motor. 

Low Battery Power

Underneath the steps, you will find a battery. Low battery power could be responsible for the steps not working properly. Check to see if it has power—a voltage of 12.6 volts. This can be done by connecting the battery to a voltmeter. 

Damaged Wires

Another culprit for steps problems is damaged or loose wires. You can check under the step to ensure that they are securely connected and in place. If loose, you can use electrical tape to secure them. However, if the wires happen to have tears or other damage, you may have to replace them.

This is a relatively simple task. The motor is located under the step and has four bolts and a pin that holds it in place. Twist the bolts until loose using a socket wrench then slide the pin out of place. You can then work the motor back and forth to loosen it and remove it.
